LYON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A crash between two semis in Oakland County caused a total freeway closure for several hours on I-96 after debris and fuel was strewn about the roadway on Monday evening.

Michigan State Police said they became aware of the crash around 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 30 on I-96 near S. Hill Road in Lyon Township. Troopers arrived on the scene in Oakland County to find one of the semis leaking fuel and a large amount of debris scattered across all three lanes.

After a preliminary investigation, troopers found one of the semis was stopped on the narrow right shoulder and the right lane of the freeway due to a flat tire. Another semi truck passing by then sideswiped the parked semi, causing a fuel spill and wreckage on the road.

According to MSP, debris from the crash stretched for roughly ¼ of a mile.

The driver of the parked semi truck was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, troopers said. The second semi driver was unhurt.

The freeway was shutdown entirely for several hours at Milford Road to allow crews to clean-up the three lanes. The lanes were opened back up around 2 a.m. Tuesday, officials said.
