Man shot and killed by Ecorse police responding to domestic violence call

ECORSE (WWJ) -- A man is dead after being shot by a police officer in Ecorse Thursday night.

According to Michigan State Police, the situation unfolded after officers with the Ecorse Police Department responded to a call about a domestic violence incident at a home on High Street, near Outer Drive.


On the scene they found a woman who was cut and actively bleeding.

While officers were helping the woman, a man approached, armed with a box cutter.

The man didn't listen to officers when they ordered him to drop the weapon and was tased, police said,

The man allegedly got back up and charged at officers, and that's when an officer shot the man.

The 37-year-old man was taken to a local hospital were he died, Michigan State Police said.

The woman's condition is not known at this time.

Police said there were no injuries to the officer or the public.

One officer has been placed on administrative leave as the shooting is being investigated by Michigan State Police. “Once the investigation is completed a investigators report will be submitted to the prosecutor for review," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw.

No names have been released.

This was one of two unrelated deadly police shootings in Metro Detroit Thursday night. The other was in Waterford Township.
