DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- A Dearborn Heights police officer is at home recuperating from a head laceration and concussion after a Fourth of July altercation with four suspects at a local business.
Police say at approximately 5:50 p.m., authorities received a 911 call regarding trouble with customers at a business in the 23000 block of Ford Road.
The caller reported that four men were threatening employees while making references to them having a firearm.
As the suspects were driving away from the business, police said they conducted a traffic stop. They ordered the four men to show their hands due to the allegations that a firearm was involved.
In response, the men responded by yelling obscenities and refusing verbal commands.
Shortly thereafter, all but the driver exited the vehicle and walked
around, which police said further jeopardized their own, as well as the officers' safety.
Ultimately, the driver was physically removed from the vehicle after ignoring the officers' verbal commands, and in the process, suffered a head laceration.
He was later transported to the hospital for treatment.
During this, another occupant -- 24-year-old Hassan Hamadi of Dearborn --headbutted an officer. The officer sustained a head laceration which required several stitches to close. He also received a concussion.
Hamadi, who was also resisting arrest, was tasered and placed into custody after assaulting two other officers.
Police said that a black CO2 pistol resembling a semi-automatic handgun was later recovered from the suspects' vehicle.
Authorities said that the actions displayed by the four occupants "quickly escalated into a dynamic situation" with officers dealing with the prospect of a weapon-related incident.
Dearborn Heights Police Chief Jerrod Hart explained that if the men didn't respond and act in the way they did, they would have likely driven off with a trespass notice.
"While many community members were celebrating Independence Day with friends and family, our brave women and men of the Dearborn Heights Police Department were guarding our community. Upon responding to a call for help, our Officers were attacked and that is unacceptable" Chief Hart said. "We are failing as a society to deal with conflict in a healthy manner. We quickly resort to violence instead of dialogue. I ask you to join me in calling for a time of civility and mutual respect as we build a community-focused police department. Attacking police officers is not the answer."
The Wayne County Prosecutors Office authorized a three-count warrant charging Hamadi with the following:
• Count 1: Police Officer - Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing Causing Injury –
4 year felony
• Count 2: Police Officer – Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing – 2 year felony
• Count 3: Police Officer – Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing – 2 year felony.
Hamadi was arraigned on the above charges Tuesday. His bond was set at $25,000/no 10% If unable to post the bond, he will be transported to the Wayne County Jail.
Additionally, officers arrested and issued citations to the remaining subjects who were released after being booked:
• 30-year-old male resident of Dearborn – Disorderly Conduct and Hindering a Police Officer
• 32-year-old male resident of Dearborn – Disorderly Conduct and Hindering a Police Officer
• 30-year-old male resident of Detroit – Disorderly Conduct
