Dearborn police impound over 20 illegal mini bikes, mopeds in 2 weeks since announcing crackdown

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Mini bikes are not allowed on city streets in Dearborn and officers will continue to take them "as long as we see them," law enforcement officials warned this week.

Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said via social media that police have amassed quite a collection of the motor vehicles after the crackdown on mini bikes and mopeds was announced two weeks ago.


"We've impounded 20 of these bikes and we will continue to do more if we need to," Shahin said.

The chief states the motor vehicles are not street legal and can be very dangerous. He said one boy was hit by a vehicle while on a mini bike just last week.

Over 20 mini bikes and mopeds have been impounded over the past week in Dearborn. Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin stated "there is no place for them on city streets". It's important to note most mini bikes are not street legal Parents can also be written a ticket for under age drivers due to parental responsibilities. Just last week a young boy was struck by a vehicle while on his mini bike . Shahin also stated "we will continue to impound them as long as we see them on city streets".

"They're not registered and they're not designed to be on city streets," Shahin said on social media. "I don't want to see kids get hurt on these things. We've already had an accident last week and they're just too dangerous to be on city streets; that's not what they're designed for."

Shahin said they will continue to impound the bikes and warned that parents will be held responsible and issued a ticket if underage drivers are caught riding them,
