DEARBORN, Mich. (WWJ) – Residents in Dearborn are being warned to be on the watch for con artists who may approach them by phone.
In a message released Thursday, the Dearborn Police Department is asking citizens to “remain alert for people, claiming to be from government agencies, requesting payment for fines, fees, jail bonds, taxes, and other collections.”
Government agencies seldom, if ever, communicate with the public directly via email, phone, or social media.
The city of Dearborn, the Dearborn Police Department, and the 19th District Court will never contact anyone and request money.
Fraudulent operators often go to tremendous measures to disguise their genuine identities.

If you are called by anyone claiming to be from a government agency, the police department says to request an in-person meeting to discuss the matter and use a local police department as the meeting location.
“If approached in-person by someone claiming to be a government agent, please request identification from the subject, and do not hesitate to call the police to assist you in verifying the identity of the subject,” police said.
It was not clear whether any specific scams or incidents had prompted Thursday's message.
