ROMULUS (WWJ) -- Staffing shortages from COVID-19 are causing disruptions for the fifth day straight at airports across the country.
Locally, there have been cancellations and delays of many flights at Detroit Metro Airport, the majority of which are on Delta and partner airline SkyWest.
Among those experiencing travel woes are football fans who are flying to Florida to see the Michigan Wolverines take on the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday in the Orange Bowl.
Dan Leach from WWJ’s sister station 97.1 The Ticket had a Delta flight to Orlando canceled at 4 a.m. on Tuesday. He was able to re-book on the Delta app, but he has some words of advice to fellow travelers.
“Continue to look at your app, make sure you know what’s going on, because things are changing by the minute,” Leach said. “If you’ve got a flight in the morning or at noon or 1 or 2, make sure you’re looking hours and hours in advance.”
Leach notes that it was surprisingly easy to re-book on the app, and there were plenty of options, but most flights had layovers.
Delta has also said it's been working hard to reschedule passengers, explaining that the cancelations were made only after the airline "exhausted all options and resources — including rerouting and substitutions of aircraft and crews to cover scheduled flying."
Travelers are urged to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
