DETROIT (WWJ) -- The final design for a streetscape project to restore Detroit's Chinatown has been unveiled.
The Peterboro Streetscape Project will enhance old Chinatown and honor its history, according to Midtown Detroit, Inc. Executive Director Melanie Markowicz.
To be located in the South Cass Corridor — on Peterboro between Cass and Second avenues — the new design features repaved side walks, monuments, Chinese lighting fixtures, and more.
Markowicz said interest to restore Chinatown came after a building, which once housed the Chinese Merchants Association, was demolished in 2023.
"This really galvanized the Asian-American community to really honor the past of this neighborhood and all that had happened here," Markowicz said. "And it really created this momentum and interest in exploring its history and safeguarding the remainder of what is still left from that history."
WWJ Newsradio 950's Darrylin Horne reports the project will cost $2.4 million, with some help from an infrastructure grant. A fundraiser is being launched to cover the around $1.4 million remaining.
Construction could start as soon as spring of 2027.
