DETROIT (WWJ) -- Is Detroit's animal control facility so run-down that the animals there are contracting illnesses?
That's the claim being made by the Detroit Dog Rescue, which is now working to take in some of the sick dogs that have been in the city's care.
Mark Kumpf, the director of Detroit Animal Care and Control, admits that they do have an overcrowding issue, and they welcome the rescue group's effort to ease that problem.
However, Kumpf was also quick to point out that they have a veterinarian on staff that treats sick animals within the facility, and that Detroit animal control does the best they can to care for the animals.
The Detroit Dog Rescue says many of the animals have respiratory issues caused from a steadily decaying facility, and the building is in desperate need of renovations.
Kumpf echoed that sentiment, telling ClickOnDetroit that the building is "difficult to sanitize."
"We do heroic things here to keep up with it," Kumpf said.
