(WWJ/AP) A metro Detroit bar is honoring the 13 fallen heroes who died in the attacks at the Kabul airport.
Sports Channel Bar in St. Clair Shores, on Jefferson Avenue, laid out 13 beers at 13 empty chairs at its bar to honor Nicole Gee, Rylee McCollum, Kareem Nikoui, Maxton Soviak, Humberto Sanchez, Dylan Merola, Jared Schmitz, Taylor Hoover, Deagan Page, Johanny Pichardo, Ryan Knauss, Hunter Lopez, and David Espinoza.
The eleven Marines, one Navy soldier, and one Army soldier died too young when suicide bombers set off a bomb at Kabul airport Thursday morning. Most of them were in their early twenties, the oldest just 31.
“We have a flag from the military. We have a sign up that says ‘honoring our fallen men and women and praying for their families.” Bartender Debbie Lang told WWJ’s Sandra McNeill.
A blue jean jacket with Old Glory embroidered on it is draped over an empty chair.
“We feel bad and there is not a whole lot we can do right now for them, so we just wanted people to remember…not just shove it under the rug like it was no big deal," Lang said. "We want people to remember it was a big deal.”
The tribute will stay up for 13 days—through the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
