The reported earnings are nearly double what the casinos made in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Slot machines accounted for 77% of the casinos’ earnings, pulling in $998.8 million. Table games made the second highest earnings, generating 21% of revenue at $268 million.

Retail sports betting rounded out the report, making $26.95 million — about 2% of total earnings.

In 2020, casinos were closed down as the state battled an uptick in COVID-19 cases, costing millions in tax revenue for the city of Detroit, according to the board.

The pandemic restrictions saw casino earnings in 2020 fall to $639 million in aggregate revenue— a far cry from their record-setting $1.454 billion in 2019.
