DETROIT (WWJ) A Detroit church is giving away a total of $25,000 in free gas on Sunday as part of their "Gas On God!" Giveaway.

Citadel of Praise on Lyndon Street is teaming up with five Detroit gas stations to give more than 600 drivers a chance to fill up their tank for free.

Each gas station will be offering up to $5,000 in free gas— and a maximum of $40 of gas for each car. It will be first come first serve.

The participating gas stations are:

-Marathon at Schoolcraft and Evergreen
-BP at Fenkell and Evergreen
-Shell at Grand River and Evergreen
-Marathon at Grand River and Stahelin
-Sunoco at Greenfield and Schoolcraft

According WXYZ, Pastor Spencer Ellis said the congregation chose the gas stations because Brightmoor is one of the "most impoverished neighborhoods" in the city and they wanted to lend a helping hand.

WXYZ reports the congregation raised donations throughout the year to quintuple the size of their giveaway; last April, they gave out $5,000 in free gas at a single station.

The giveaway started at 11 a.m. Sunday and will keep going throughout the day until each gas station runs out of their allotted $5,000.
