(WWJ) It was a dazzling SURPRISE in the night sky last night across Michigan.
Many people reported seeing big, green fireball at around 9:30 p.m. Monday.
The American Meteor Society had 111 reports of a meteor from people in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Many people reported seeing just a bright streak -- the latest of several in the country over the past week.
Astronomer Mike Narlock, at the Cranbrook Instituted of Science, said this particular meteor stands because of the green color.
"The colors of these meteors as they streak across the sky certainly tells us something about the chemical makeup of the object, he told WWJ, in an interview Tuesday morning. "And green is generally indicative of large amounts of magnesium in whatever the parent body was."
The reports came from the Macomb and Oakland County areas, all the way to west side of the state in Grand Rapids. One person said they felt it in the Pine Knob Golf Course area, shaking their house when it hit the ground. Someone who heard it in Novi compared it to a far off explosion or plane taking off.
Meteorite hunters have rushed to Ohio in the recent days after a giant seven-ton meteor exploded there.
