DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two firefighters from the Detroit Fire Department have handed in their resignations after being involved in drunk driving accidents while on the job.
Reports state that the two separate incidents happened this winter, the first of which occurred in February when a call came in while a party was being held at Detroit firehouse.
The firefighter who responded to the call was under the influence alcohol, and ran into a parked car when he arrived at the scene. Fox2Detroit reports that the engine driver blew a .108 alcohol level, and was subsequently suspended while the incident was investigated by DFD.
The second situation took place just a week later, when a fire captain was on an overnight call in a DFD SUV and crashed into a fence. The vehicle was spotted hanging over the Lodge Freeway, and the captain was then arrested and tested for drugs and alcohol.
The department says he was also driving drunk when the incident occurred.
"I'm outraged at the behavior of the chief who was supposed to be in charge of making sure that our men and women are fit for duty and he himself was not fit for duty," Detroit Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said in a statement.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has since said that changes are being put into place within the Detroit Fire Department to ensure similar incidents don't happen again, according to ClickOnDetroit.com.
While both drunk driving accidents are still reportedly under investigation, neither of the firefighters who resigned have been charged.
