DETROIT (WWJ) A Detroit funeral home's mistake left an already grieving family even more heartbroken.
Multiple news outlets report the Hutchinson Funeral Home on Seven Mile near Mound accidentally cremated Kimberlly Moore, 61, before her viewing on Friday, September 18. They then allegedly put another woman in her coffin in Moore's clothing.
WXYZ reports Moore's daughter realized the error before the funeral, when she planned to put on her mother's lashes and nails, but noticed the woman in the coffin didn't have a mole on her foot like her mother did. According to the news outlet, the funeral home told the family the toe tag fell off, leading to the mix-up.
Moore, a mother of five and grandmother of 28, died of endometrial cancer.
The Hutchinson Funeral Home said it has launched an internal review, adding they're deeply sorry for the emotional distress it caused her family.
A spokesperson for Hutchinson told ClickonDetroit that they're working to identify the woman who was prepared for Moore's funeral.
They provided the full statement to multiple news sources: “We are aware of the family’s concerns and we will continue to communicate with them honestly and respectfully. We have launched our own internal review to determine exactly what happened and we will deal with it accordingly. Out of respect for Ms. Moore and her family, we ask that their privacy be honored during this time. We will share more when we can.”
