DETROIT (WWJ) -- A gas station that was illegally selling marijuana on Detroit's west side has been shut down by city officials with the help of police, officials said Monday.
According to the Detroit Police Department, neighborhood police officers worked together with City of Detroit inspectors to close the business, located in the 4300 block of W. Chicago, near Freeland St.
The DPD on Monday released a video showing baggies of marijuana flower, as well what appears to be gummies or similar edibles that police say were available for sale in the store.
"Great job by NPOs Tyler, Maples, and Vazquez from our DPD 2nd Precinct!" the DPD wrote, sharing the video on social media. "This is what cleaning up our streets looks like. Awesome work by some of Detroit's finest!"
While it's now legal in Michigan to grow and possess marijuana in certain amounts, it's still against the law to sell marijuana without a license to do so, and recreational pot business licenses are not yet available in Detroit.
Sales on legal recreational marijuana in Michigan are taxed, 10%on top of the 6% sales tax, with the tax dollars going to schools, roads and cities where the sales take place.
Meanwhile, the federal government continues to classify cannabis as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and cocaine.
