DETROIT (WWJ) -- Charges have been filed against a man accused of causing a crash that killed an off-duty police officer in Detroit.

Authorities said 32-year-old Officer Cameron Richardson was driving on Hoover Street near Greiner Street just after 12 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5, when his Jeep was hit by a van driven by Dayjon Antwian Macon.

Richardson's Jeep rolled over, and he was killed.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says Macon, 28, of Detroit, fled the scene after the crash, and a Detroit Police investigation led to his arrest the next day.

At Macon's arraignment in 36th District Court on Thursday, Assistant Prosecutor Lisa Coyle said Macon called his relatives, but never called police.

"He had told them he was in a car accident, someone was killed, and he got scared and he fled," Coyle said. "Well, your honor, the people are alleging that not only he's a danger, he shouldn't have been driving. He was on a suspended license."

Macon has been charged with Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident When at Fault – Causing Death, Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident – Causing Serious Impairment or Death, Moving Violation Causing Death, and Driving While License Suspended.

“The charged defendant in this case allegedly violated the rules of the road striking Police Officer Cameron Richardson’s Jeep causing it to roll over, killing him. The evidence will show that in addition to that, he fled the scene. This criminal behavior was cruel and callous,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy, in a statement.

Macon's attorney argued for a personal bond, but the judge disagreed and ordered Macon held on a $250,000 bond. Another hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Officer Richardson joined the Detroit Police Department after serving in the Army. He has two daughters.
