DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man was formally charged by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy with double murder in connection with the shooting death of two men at a liquor store on the city's west side.

John Edward-Dayter Montgomery, 44, was charged with two counts of First Degree Murder along with other charges stemming from the shooting death of Raymondo Bankhead, 60, and James Deberry, 57 on Feb. 1.

Officials said the shooting originated as an argument between Montgomery and Deberry while inside a liquor store late Tuesday morning. Employees asked the two men to leave and the argument escalated in the parking lot.

Witnesses told police that Montgomery began assaulting Deberry, hitting him several times with a metal bar. Deberry grabbed a crowbar and landed several blows to Montgomery in the head. Montgomery produced a handgun and shot at Deberry twice, striking him and an innocent bystander, Bankhead.

Detroit police officers responded to a report of shots fired at the 9920 block of Wyoming Street at apporximently 11:12 a.m. and found both victims suffering from injuries inflicted by a firearm.

Bankhead was pronounced dead on the scene while Deberry was taken to an area hospital were he later died of his injuries.

Police Chief James White expressed frustration on the Detroit police's Twitter page.

“I can’t fathom the pain these two families are enduring. Enough is enough! This should of never happened. We should all be outraged. Thank you to DPD’s hardworking women and men on this tragic murder case,” White said in a tweet.

Montgomery is expected to be arraigned Friday at the 36th District Court.

No further details were released.
