DETROIT (WWJ) – A 25-year-old Detroit man is behind bars after allegedly opening fire on Detroit police officers Friday night.

Larez Hakess McKnight has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and two counts of felony firearm, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday.

McKnight's bond was set at $1 million during his arraignment on Monday afternoon.

Detroit police were called to a store on Puritan Avenue, just west of Livernois, around 7:30 p.m. Friday for a reported felonious assault.

As officers began searching the area, they found McKnight a block over in front of a home on San Juan Drive.

While officers were still in their vehicle, McKnight allegedly pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at the officers.

Officers then exited their vehicle and returned fire while Defendant McKnight fled from the area on foot. While chasing him, officers and McKnight exchanged gunfire, according to the prosecutor's office.

McKnight was hit in the left leg and eventually arrested two blocks away on Tuller Street. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Authorities have not released any information about the alleged assault at the store that prompted the initial police response.

McKnight's next court date is scheduled for Wednesday.
