Detroit man charged with murder, child abuse after death of 1-year-old girl he was babysitting in November

DETROIT (WWJ) – A Detroit man has been charged with murdering an infant while he was babysitting her last fall.

LeRoy Metoyer was arraigned Saturday on charges of felony murder and first-degree child abuse for the incident on Nov. 29.

Metoyer, 37, was babysitting 1-year-old Justice Starks at a home on Lancashire Street – near Outer Drive and Grand River Avenue on the city's northwest side – that day, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Metoyer was caring for the infant of a friend when he allegedly fatally assaulted her. Medics were called to the home and took the girl to a hospital, where she died two days later.

While authorities have not released many specific details of the assault, the Wayne County Medical Examiner determined the baby's cause of death was "multiple blunt force trauma to the head," according to the prosecutor's office.

Prosecutors say "more complete facts and evidence will be placed on the record in court at the Preliminary Examination," which is scheduled for March 20. He is scheduled for a probable cause conference on March 13.

Metoyer was remanded to jail after his arraignment in 36th District Court on Saturday.
