DETROIT (WWJ) — A Detroit man is facing federal charges for allegedly trying to provide financial support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, the foreign terrorist organization known as ISIS.

US Attorney Dawn Ison announced Tuesday 25-year-old Jibreel Pratt has been charged in an indictment with two counts of attempting to provide currency and monetary instruments to ISIS.

Pratt was arrested at his Detroit home Tuesday morning and he was expected to appear in court later in the day. Ison’s office planned to ask Pratt to be held in pretrial detention “because of his danger to the community and the risk that he will flee.”

The charges stem from two instances in March and May 2023, according to Ison’s office.

The Detroit News reports Pratt's indictment comes nine months after he was charged in a separate federal criminal case in which he was accused of wire fraud and other financial crimes involving "an illicit online marketplace" called Genesis Market that sold user names, passwords and other data stolen from computers infected with malware.

“The indictment alleges that the defendant attempted to support and join ISIS, which is one of the most brutal terrorist organizations in the world,” Ison said, per a press release.

Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan, said Pratt “allegedly attempted to provide support to a foreign terrorist organization well known for committing violence and human rights violations.”

If convicted, Pratt faces up to 20 years in prison for each count.
