DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man has been found guilty of murder for shooting a Sterling Heights man to death in a fight over a card game.
The Michigan Attorney General's Office announced a jury in 3rd Circuit Court in Wayne County on Friday convicted 46-year-old Lashawn Wells of Detroit on a charge of second degree murder, as well as one count of felony firearm.
The AG's office said Wells and the victim, 41-year-old Marquell Scholar from Sterling Heights, were playing cards when they got into an argument.
The situational escalated, and Wells shot Scholar nine times, killing him.
"That a game of cards should result in murder is a tragedy, and I am grateful to see the jury bring accountability to this senseless crime," said Nessel, in a statement.
The case was investigated by the Special Investigation Division of Michigan State Police and prosecuted by the Department of Attorney General.
Wells is scheduled to be sentenced in 3rd Circuit Court on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
He faces up to life in prison.
