Barricaded armed suspect surrenders after standoff with Detroit police

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A barricaded gunman has surrendered to police on Detroit’s westside.

The situation began in the early hours of Tuesday morning on Ward Street near Meyers and West Chicago following the reported attack on a woman.

The victim tells WWJ’s Charlie Langton she was sleeping when her boyfriend unexpectedly entered the house, jumped on her and then fired a shot.

She was then able to escape the home without injury.

The 35-year-old suspect then barricaded himself inside the home for several hours as negotiators from the Detroit Police Department worked to talk him down.

He voluntarily surrendered to authorities around 9 a.m. without incident.

Speaking with WWJ's Charlie Langton, the victim says she believed the suspect could have been under the influence of alcohol.

She also expressed gratitude that Detroit police were able to contain the situation without harming the suspect.
