DETROIT (WWJ) – A young Detroit man who pleaded guilty to a string of carjackings in Beverly Hills has been sentenced to nearly a decade in prison.

Gregory Horsley, 20, was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for a 2021 carjacking, as well as two attempted carjackings and shots fired from an assault rifle. He pleaded guilty this May.

U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison’s office says Horsley targeted the victims at random in the area of 13 Mile and Evergreen Roads.

On May 14, 2021 Horsley approached a 16-year-old victim who was seated in his car and pulled out a loaded assault rifle, pointing it at the teen. As the teen victim drove away, Horsley opened fire, hitting the car.

The teen sustained minor injuries from broken glass, police officials said at the time of the crime.

Shortly after the first victim sped away, Horsely pulled his gun on a woman sitting in her car. She got out and Horsley got in the driver’s seat, but he couldn’t drive away, as the victim had the key fob in her pocket, according to Ison’s office.

He then got out of the woman’s car and approached a third driver, again pointing the weapon at the victim and ordering him out of the car.

The driver complied and Horsley then took the keys and drove off in the car. The carjacked vehicle was found a few days later.

Horsley was eventually identified by surveillance video and taken into custody at his home in Detroit.

“Those who seek to prey on motorists going about their business will continue to have our full attention, and we will not hesitate to pursue federal prosecution and significant penalties at our disposal,” Ison said, per a press release.

“The FBI is committed to leveraging its assets in collaboration with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to keep our communities safe from gun violence,” said Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan.

The case was investigated by special agents of the FBI, the Beverly Hills Police Department, the Southfield Police Department, the Detroit Police Department, and handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Jeanine Brunson and Michael Taylor.
