DETROIT (WWJ) — A man who got out of his car on the Lodge Freeway following a crash Monday night narrowly avoided being hit by a car.
Michigan State Police troopers and Detroit fire crews were called to the northbound Lodge near Glendale shortly before 10 p.m. after getting word of a rollover crash.
When troopers showed up, they found a 33-year-old Detroit man trapped inside his rolled-over car. Fire crews were able to extricate the man, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital, MSP officials said.
Investigators say there was a previous unrelated two-car crash in the area that was partially blocking the left lane of the freeway.
The driver of one of the vehicles had gotten out of his car and was trying to direct traffic away from the vehicles that were blocking the lane.
As he saw the car speeding in the left lane, MSP officials say he jumped over the wall to get away from the oncoming car, which hit his vehicle and rolled over.
“We want to remind drivers to stay in their vehicles and call 911 after a crash.” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on X. “If you can move your car out of the travel lanes do so. It will not affect the crash investigation. Do not get out of your car on the freeway.”
No one else was hurt in the crash. Family members have been notified, but the man’s name has not been released.
