(WWJ) – A Detroit man with ties to a Mexican drug cartel will spend at least 40 years in prison after being found guilty of drug and conspiracy charges.
Alexander Aceval, 57, was sentenced Thursday to 40-60 years behind bars for conspiring to hire someone to help him import and distribute large quantities of cocaine that had been brought across the southern border in semi-trucks by a Mexican cartel, Attorney General Dana Nessel announced.
He had been charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to deliver 1,000 grams or more of cocaine. He was found guilty last month.
Nessel's office did not identify the cartel Aceval was involved with.
Michigan State Police began investigating Aceval and his accomplice in 2019 after the Metro Narcotics Enforcement Team received tips about their activity Downriver.
Investigators followed them to a parking lot in an industrial park in Brownstown Township and eventually pulled them over in Lincoln Park.
During the traffic stop detectives found about 40 kilos of cocaine loaded into a pickup truck.
"This sentence will serve to keep a repeat offender from continuing to flood our state with illegal and dangerous narcotics, and our communities are safer for it," Nessel said, per a press release.
Authorities say Aceval was previously convicted in 2005 on similar charges. He was released in 2016 after serving 11 years. That case also involved Downriver communities, according to court documents.
That prior conviction led to an enhanced sentence for Aceval.
