DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit People Mover has reopened after being shut down as tens of thousands of people packed downtown Detroit for Opening Day.

The People Mover reopened shortly before 6 p.m., officials announced on Twitter.

"Following successful repair, safety inspections and testing, DPM is restarting. Continue post-Opening Day celebrations or get ready for the Wings game tonight," officials said.

The People Mover will be running until 10 p.m.

Detroit People Mover officials said early Thursday morning their system was forced to shut down after a routine check conducted on Thursday morning found damage to a small section of track.

"Our maintenance teams are conducting a full investigation to determine the extent of the damage and we will place all efforts toward making repairs as soon as possible," Detroit Transportation Corporation General Manager Robert Cramer said in a update earlier in the day. "Safety is our top priority, and we will not reopen until it is determined the system is completely safe."
