DETROIT (WWJ) – A murder suspect is in custody after officials say ShotSpotter technology led them to the scene of a fatal shooting on Detroit’s northeast side Thursday afternoon.
Detroit police received a report from ShotSpotter of gunfire in the area of Manning and Boulder – near Kelly Road and State Fair Avenue – just after 12:30 p.m. and were able to find the scene, officials said.
When officers arrived, they found a man with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body, according to Sgt. Jordan Hall, who said during a press conference the scene of the crime was “a bit further away” from where the technology reported, but it was “in the vicinity.”
Medics were called to the scene, but didn’t make it in time. The victim, whose name and age have not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting apparently stemmed from a previous dispute between the suspect and victim, but Hall didn’t specify the nature of the dispute. Officials didn’t provide any details about the suspect.
It was not clear whether the suspect was still at the scene of the shooting or where exactly they were arrested.
Earlier this month Detroit City Council expanded the use of ShotSpotter technology, an aerial gunfire detection system that uses sensors to pinpoint the locations of gunshot activity.
Advocates of the technology say it helps police respond to scenes within minutes of a shooting, which is often helpful when no 9-1-1 calls are made.
Hall noted police received a 9-1-1 call regarding Thursday’s shooting, but said it came in after officers had already received the ShotSpotter alert.
“It’s very unfortunate for any victim here in our community to have to experience this, especially a murder, but we’re grateful to have the technology such as ShotSpotter technology bring us to that area and have our officers to that area quickly and make that arrest and also attempt to save the victim’s life,” Hall said.
