DETROIT (WWJ) -- As freeway shootings increase, discussions are underway to determine if a new camera system can be set up to help catch those involved.

Detroit Police Chief James White said law enforcement agencies have been taking notice that there have been more shootings taking place on freeways in Detroit and across the state, which has sparked conversations about a freeway camera system.

White said that it appears some of the freeway shootings are happening because of Detroit's Green Light program, which involves video cameras at businesses -- such as gas stations -- that are monitored by DPD 24/7.

"We actually find sometimes that it appears that some people may be making decisions to resolve disputes in different areas because of the visibility of the green light," said White.

As of right now, the price tag for this camera system has not been determined.

White said the cameras won't be used to catch speeders and will only be used in violent crimes.
