DETROIT (WWJ) — Detroit police are investigating after a child shot himself in the hand with an unsecured gun on the city’s west side Friday afternoon.
It happened around 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 14 at a home on Fullerton Avenue, near Davison and Dexter, according to Detroit Police Cpt. Michael DiCicco.
DiCicco said authorities are still investigating, but it appears the 4-year-old boy got ahold of an unsecured gun inside the home and shot himself.
The boy was taken to Henry Ford Hospital, where DiCicco said he was listed in "good condition" and was expected to recover.
Two adults -- the boy's mother and another family member -- were home at the time of the shooting, according to DiCicco. No other children were in the home.
At least one other gun was found inside the home.
DiCicco said the other family member is in custody on outstanding warrants, but no charges have been filed in connection with Friday's shooting.
