ROSEVILLE (WWJ) — A now former Detroit police officer has been charged in connection with a motorcycle crash last summer that killed a man in Roseville.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office on Monday announced 28-year-old Corey Siquan Jones has been charged with one misdemeanor count of moving violation causing death for the Aug. 16 crash that killed 26-year-old Evan Newman.

Prosecutors say Jones drove through a red light on 12 Mile Road that night and hit Newman, who had lawfully driven through a green light. Newman died at the scene.

Jones was off-duty at the time of the crash, according to a report from Fox 2.

The Roseville Police Department concluded its investigation earlier this month and forwarded the case to the prosecutor’s office.

Jones was arraigned Friday and received a $5,000 personal bond. His next court date is scheduled for March 5.

"Police officers are sworn to uphold the law, but they are also bound by it. No one is above the law, and our justice system must apply equally to all," Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido said, per a press release.

A spokesperson for the city said Jones is no longer on the force, having resigned from the Detroit Police Department in December 2024.

If convicted, Jones could spend a year in prison.
