DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit police officer is in stable condition after being struck and dragged by a car while trying to stop it from drifting -- or street racing -- early Monday morning.
WWJ’s Charlie Langton reports that police blocked off the area near Bagley and Vermont streets in Corktown as they search for the driver and a passenger, who were in a Ford Mustang.
Police were reportedly on the scene at the intersection around 3 a.m. after receiving a tip that an organized street race was planned in that area.
When drivers arrived, an officer approached the driver of the Mustang and attempted to remove him from the vehicle. That’s when the driver reportedly reversed into a fence, dragging the officer with him for several feet, and then drove off.
Police fired several shots, but the driver and passenger were able to get away. The Mustang was found a short time later, but the two suspects were gone.
The officer, who has been with Detroit Police for more than 20 years, is currently being treated at a nearby hospital and is expected to be okay.
An investigation by Detroit Police is ongoing.
