Detroit set to announce a "major new incentive" to get residents vaccinated

DETROIT (WWJ) Detroit is set to announce a "major new incentive" next week to get more residents vaccinated against COVID-19

This comes as the Motor City joins a nationwide effort called a Month of Action.

Mayor Mike Duggan will compete with the mayors of dozens of major American cities to see which city can ramp up its vaccination rates the most by July 4.

It's unclear what this announcement will be…but some incentives used across the country include a million-dollar lottery, full ride scholarships and free beer.

"The City of Detroit and Detroit Health Department have led the country in innovative strategies to increase vaccination numbers, but we still need to get more of our residents vaccinated," Mayor Duggan said in a release.

Detroit officials said the city has already implemented multiple strategies to get vaccines into arms including walk-up and after-hour vaccination sites and pop-up clinics at churches, grocery stores and more.

The Good Neighbor Program remains in effect for the time being, where anyone who brings a Detroit resident to a scheduled vaccination appointment receives a $50 gift Visa card. A Detroit Health Department Mobile Unit can go anywhere to provide vaccinations.

Canvassing teams are also going door to door to educate residents about the vaccines and vaccination locations.

The Michigan COVID-19 vaccine dashboard reports about 35% of Detroit residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine. That's significantly below the statewide average of nearly 54%.

If you live in Detroit, you can text your address to 313-217-3732 and find the three closest vaccination sites to your home or workplace.
