DETROIT (WWJ) — Two women are being called heroes after helping their neighbors escape a fire in their Detroit apartment building early Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out around 4 a.m. at a four-story building on Seward between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, near the New Center neighborhood.
A woman named Chloe and her roommate were awakened by the fire and jumped into action, helping their neighbors.
“They were able to awaken the other people and actually probably saved a lot of lives because they got everybody else up, everybody out. They did part of our job for us, which was good,” Detroit Fire Battalion Chief Christian Spidlick told WWJ’s Charlie Langton, calling the women “heroes.”
Chloe told Langton “there was water rushing from our ceiling and the fire was going up to the ceiling.”
“Our lights in our apartment had burst out. They’re telling me it’s a burst pipe,” she said. “We were lucky enough to notice that the water was rushing and our apartment was already filled up with smoke; probably a few more minutes and we would’ve been passed out and not able to wake up.”
Detroit fire crews got to the scene quickly and put out the fire, though dozens of residents were displaced, according to Langton. Some residents said there were no smoke alarms.
There were no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though officials have said no foul play is suspected.
