
GROSSE ILE (WWJ) – If you see a large police presence on the Detroit River Wednesday near Grosse Ile, no need to panic – it’s just a drill.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue Team and multiple agencies across Southeast Michigan will be participating in a plane crash simulation exercise on Wednesday.
Strike teams from the Southeast Michigan Dive Group will assemble with other teams at Grosse Ile Municipal Airport to respond to a simulated plane crash on the Detroit River and Lake Erie, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.
It is believed to be the largest diving team exercise ever organized in Michigan.
The Southeast Michigan Dive Group – comprised of dive and rescue teams from 21 Michigan counties and among the largest in the United States – responds with trained personnel and specialized equipment to the scene of a water-related incident for the purpose of rescue, provide underwater recovery of victims. The group, activated and coordinated by the OCSO, also aids investigators in the recovery of property to be processed as evidence in a criminal investigation.
Wednesday’s exercise will begin at 8 a.m. at the Grosse Ile Municipal Airport and is expected to last until 2 p.m.
Other departments and agencies involved in the exercise include teams from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Downriver Mutual Aid, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and police departments from Detroit, Saginaw and Windsor, Ontario. As many as 50 divers are expected to participate.
Last month, Homeland Security and multiple local agencies conducted a full-scale emergency exercise in downtown Detroit.
