FRENCHTOWN TWP. (WWJ) - Divers have found the body of a man who went missing in the water at Monroe County's Sterling State Park Monday night while playing with a toy boat with his son.

Members of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Marine Division and Dive Team recovered the body of 49-year-old Corey Michael Carrabino of Monroe shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, the sheriff's office said.

Carrabino's body was found in about eight feet of water, 50 yards from shore in the lagoon located to the south of the boat launch at the park, according to the sheriff's office.

Around 7:15 p.m. Monday, the Frenchtown Township Fire Department and Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the park after reports that a man was seen in the water, yelling for help and struggling to stay afloat.

First responders were unable to find the man, after it was reported that he went into the water around 300 feet offshore.

WWJ's Mike Campbell reports the man was at the park playing with the remote controlled toy boat with his 13-year-old son. Something went wrong with the boat, the man went in the water to get it, but he didn't come back.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Dive Team conducted an "extensive underwater search," and, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter was brought in to help search for Carrabino.

The Estral Beach Fire Department, Monroe City Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance also assisted at the scene.

The search was called off at around 3:30 a.m. due to darkness, officials said, but drivers and rescues returned to the scene at around 8 a.m. to keep looking for him.

The Sheriff's Office Chaplain provided support for those involved in the recovery effort, as well as the family of the victim.

Carrabino's death is still under investigation and police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the sheriff's office at 734-240-7530.
