(WWJ) Detroit Police have shot and killed an armed suspect who was attacking an officer, police said.

Police Chief James Craig said officers were called out to a home on the east side near Hanna and 8 Mile around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, where a man was armed with a knife.

“They arrived at the scene, the suspect had inflicted very serious injuries to himself with a large knife. Very horrific scene,” Craig said during a press conference.

As police attempted to take the weapon away, the suspect started to stab an officer “several times."

“The department, fearing for that officer’s safety, fired several rounds and the subject succumbed to his injuries. He is deceased,” Craig said.

Police said the man who was shot and killed lived with a mental health condition. The officer also sustained a friendly fire wound to his hand. He is in stable condition.

The officer's and the suspect's identity have not been released.
