DETROIT (WWJ) - Police made several arrests and handed out over 20 citations to drivers and spectators in a drag racing bust in Detroit Friday night.
According to Channel 4, officers with the Detroit Police Department seized a dozen vehicles after catching a group of young drivers drifting in a parking lot near Woodmere Street and Vernor Highway.
Officers told Channel 4 that they issued 20 citations and arrested three drivers.
Police believe the 12 vehicles that were confiscated will more than likely be forfeited.
“We will try to make sure they don’t get (the cars) back,” said police Commander Brian Harris to Channel 4. “Most importantly, it’ll be a financial cost for retrieving the vehicle, and hopefully it’s to be a lesson learned by the young drivers."
Harris said the incident could have serious consequences for the drivers. In addition to paying the cost of the ticket, those who were caught drifting can incur points on their license and can even have driving privileges suspended.
Spectators may face lesser repercussions, but won't be completely off the hook.
“For the spectators, there is usually a cost associated with it, or community service work to keep their records clear," Harris said.
Police did confirm one person was taken to an area hospital and admitted for non-life threatening injuries; the hospitalized individual was hit by two others who tried to flee the scene when police arrived.
Officers said that person is expected to make a full recovery.
Police did not release any additional information.
