MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - A police pursuit across county lines involving a stolen vehicle, a wrecked cruiser, a foot chase, wrong-way driving and high speeds came to an end early Saturday morning after a suspect who claimed to be on drugs was taken into custody, officials say.
Warren Police Commissioner Willian Dwyer confirmed to WWJ that the chase began just after 3 a.m. on Feb. 18 when police spotted a suspected stolen vehicle out of Livonia at the Best Western on Convention Street in Warren.
The driver also saw police and tried to get away by traveling the wrong way on northbound Van Dyke Highway or M-53, Dywer added.
Deputies with the Macomb County Sheriff's Office were called in to assist and handled most of the chase. Dwyer added that at one point in the pursuit, the suspect driver rammed a deputy's patrol car, reportedly wrecked another, and continued to flee.
At speeds of over 100 mph, the suspect led police from Macomb County over to Oakland County. Deputies attempted a PIT maneuver (precision immobilization technique) and was able to disable the vehicle, but that didn't stop the suspect.
According to police, the driver abandoned the car and ran away. Police conducted a brief foot chase before the suspect was found and taken into custody at University and Opdyke Road in Auburn Hills.
Upon arrest, Dwyer said the suspect informed officers that he had ingested prescription drugs. He was transported to Ascension Macomb hospital for further medical care -- his condition is unknown at this time.
Dwyer did not release any further details and said the investigation remains active.
