DETROIT (WWJ) - An early morning head-on crash is believed to have killed one person at the junction of two major Detroit freeways on Friday.
Michigan State Police is currently at the scene of the wreck on the northbound I-75 exit ramp to the Lodge Freeway near Trumbull where WWJ's Charlie Langton said two vehicles, a dark-colored Ford Fusion and a red GMC Sierra pick-up truck, were still crumpled up against each other.
"It's a terrible crash," Langton said. "I mean, it's an absolute head-on, both cars severely injured. Here we are getting word that it is a fatal."
MSP confirmed just before 7 a.m. that the driver of the Ford Fusion was traveling in the wrong direction, heading north in the southbound lanes of the Lodge from Larned, when it crashed into the truck just after 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 13.
The at-fault driver in the Ford, who remains unidentified at this time, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
"The driver of the GMC Sierra was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and a medical evaluation," state police added.
Langton warned that the northbound lanes of I-75 to the Lodge has been completely shutdown as crash investigators work the scene. The closure will severely affect drivers on their Friday morning commute.
"It's going to be blocked off for quite a while," Langton added.
MSP 1st Lt. Mike Shaw confirmed a medical examiner has been contacted and the cause of the crash won't be determined until after the ME's report is completed.
It remains unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
“Currently it has not been determined where the at fault driver entered the freeway or if impairment is involved," Shaw said.
The crash comes shortly after MSP revealed on social media that 822 people have died on state roadways so far this year.
In addition, 130 more people were seriously injured for a statewide total approaching 4,500. Compared to the same time last year, there have been eight fewer deaths, but 122 more serious injuries.
