ROMULUS (WWJ) – A man is facing a number of charges after allegedly losing control of their car while going 100 mph on a freeway exit ramp near Detroit Metro Airport Saturday afternoon.
Michigan State Police were called to the westbound I-94 exit ramp to Merriman Road in Romulus shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday, where witnesses told Michigan State Police the driver of a Chevy SUV was “going in excess of 100 mph while taking the ramp.”
MSP officials say the driver was unable to negotiate the curve, lost control of the SUV and slammed into a tree in the median.
The driver, whose name, age and hometown were not released, told authorities their back hurt, but refused medical treatment.
The SUV had improper plates and was unregistered. The driver, who was unlicensed, was cited for careless driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, unlawful use of a license plate, no operator’s license on person, and no proof of insurance.
Michigan State Police said on X (formerly Twitter), “when we talk about risky driving behavior this is exactly what we mean.”
“This driver is the poster child of what we are talking about when we say risky driving behavior. Speed, no insurance and vehicle not properly registered. We are lucky this wasn’t far worse,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on X.
