(WWJ) Michigan State Police have reopened a stretch of I-96 after troopers on Wednesday afternoon investigated a freeway shooting that sent a driver to the hospital.
The I-96 Express lanes were completely closed around 4 p.m. from M-8 to M-39, with traffic being diverted to the Local lanes. The freeway reopened shortly before 6:30 p.m.
Police said a 911 call came in at around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday from a man who said he'd been shot. Police said the call dropped, and the man didn't answer when the dispatcher called him back.
Troopers and local police were sent out to look for the caller, who was eventually found by Redford Police officers at Schoolcraft and Telegraph Rd.
The man told police that he was shot in the Express lanes of westbound I-96 near Outer Drive, after he was involved in a road rage incident with another driver.
The man was taken to a local hospital where his condition is unknown.
There is no information about a suspect or suspect vehicle, as the investigation continues. Police did not immediately provide an update to the investigation after the freeway reopened Wednesday evening.
This incident comes following a lengthy series of unrelated freeway shootings in the Detroit area, beginning last summer; many of which police say were a result of road rage.
Anyone with information about this case can call 734-287-5000.
Officials said the freeway would be closed for at least an hour or two. Stay tuned to WWJ for updates during traffic and weather on the 8s.
