A multi-car crash that shut down a section of I-696 early Wednesday morning was allegedly caused by a drunken driver who police say intentionally slammed into a freeway wall.
Michigan State Police report the driver intentionally crashed into the median wall on westbound I-696 near Dequindre Road. It happened at about 3 a.m. Wednesday.
The collision caused a light pole to fall onto the freeway.
And it caused a chain reaction crash as a second care slammed into the light pole and then a third car crashed into the second.
As for the drunk driver, police say he ran away from the scene, but was caught and taken into custody. An investigation is ongoing.
