(WWJ) DTE Energy is offering some help for federal workers who may be struggling financially due to the government shutdown.

The government shutdown — the longest in U.S. history — has left thousands of federal workers without pay for more than 40 days, "creating real hardship for Michigan families," a DTE spokesperson said.

To ease the burden, DTE announced on Wednesday that it is offering payment relief options for federal employees impacted by the shutdown.

Eligible customers can request a 30-day pause on bill collection without penalties. The goal, the utility said, is to provide critical breathing room during this difficult time.

To request a hold, customers can call DTE at 800-477-4747.

Not a federal employee? DTE does offer other payment assistance programs. For more information about general assistance programs, or to see if you qualify, visit this link.

This comes as the U.S. House was scheduled to take up a bill to reopen the government that the Senate passed on Monday night. While the vast majority of Democratic lawmakers are expected to vote against the bill, Speaker Mike Johnson said the GOP was “very optimistic” that the legislation has just enough votes to pass.
