DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Excessive Heat Warning ended early in Metro Detroit, but DTE Energy is still expecting a major strain on the power grid.
Over 4 million people remain under a Heat Advisory until 10 p.m. Thursday in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Genesee counties.
AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said Tuesday was less of a scorcher than Monday, but the heatwave isn't over just yet.
"We had just enough cloud cover that kept it from being truly expressive, but it was still hot yesterday," Lundberg said, speaking live on WWJ on Wednesday. "The official high was 90 degrees, down from the 95 we had on Monday. Today will probably go up a couple of degrees."
With air conditioners blasting, DTE Energy says this heatwave is putting extreme pressure on Metro Detroit's power grid.
Brian Kalka, DTE's Vice President of Distribution Operations said this could be most demanding week the electrical grid has had in at least 20 years.
"Of course, we have seen days like this in recent memory. It's really the longevity of the actually heatwave it self," Kalka explained. "I'm now seeing temperatures into the low 90s through Saturday, maybe Sunday. So, it's this six, seven-day window when you have this continued heat which is rather unprecedented."
We asked him what customers can do to reduce their electrical demand.
"Keep your shades drawn; especially on windows that the sun is facing," Kalka said. "That'll obviously not require as much air conditioning use."
"Ceiling fans are always a great option. If you have a ceiling fan in your home, obviously you have to recognize, you have to make sure it's spinning counter-clockwise so that the blades are pushing the air down into the room."
At this time, DTE doesn't believe they'll run out of capacity in Metro Detroit this week.
Looking ahead, Lundberg said he won't be surprised if the Heat Advisory is re-issued on Friday, as Saturday may turn out to be the hottest day yet this week.
