NEWPORT (WWJ) - DTE's downriver nuclear power plant was automatically taken offline Friday evening after an electrical issue shutdown a main turbine.

As reported by the Monroe News, Fermi 2 power plant spokesperson Stephen R. Tait said "The plant is safe and stable; plant equipment responded as designed. There was no risk to plant employees or the public."

Tait said the situation was a "non-emergency" and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was made aware of the shutdown.

Tait confirmed that staff at DTE is working to repair the affected equipment before the plant is restarted.

"Our top priority, as always, is the health and safety of the public."
