(WWJ) — An Eastpointe man with prior convictions for second-degree murder has been found guilty of killing his neighbors more than two years ago.
A Macomb County jury on Friday found Dennis Evans, 62, guilty of multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree premeditated murder. The trial lasted three days.
Evans shot his neighbors, 37-year-old Dorian Mitchell, and 50-year-old Christie Davis, outside their apartment complex on Jan. 27, 2022. Authorities found a mixture containing heroin and fentanyl when searching his apartment
After the shooting in the area of 10 Mile and Gratiot, Evans fled the state. After a four-day manhunt he was arrested in the San Antonio, Texas area.
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office says Evans has two previous convictions for second-degree murder, though no details were disclosed.
In addition to the murder charges, Evans was also found guilty of three counts of felony firearm – second offense, felon in possession of a firearm and delivery/manufacture of a controlled substance (40-449 grams). If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole.
"Justice has been served for the victims and their families, and our community can find comfort in knowing that a dangerous individual has been held accountable for his actions," Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido said, per a press release.
Evans is scheduled to be sentenced on April 3.
