ECORSE (WWJ) – Ecorse High School will be closed on Wednesday after a senior died in a drive-by shooting in Detroit earlier in the week.

Officials with Ecorse Public Schools said in a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon a high school senior died “as the result of an incident that happened in the community” Monday night.

Students were dismissed early at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The Detroit Police Department released additional information about the case, stating that the student was at a stop light on West Outer Drive at Fort Street at 11:30 p.m. when an unknown vehicle came along and open fired.

The student, only identified as an 18-year-old, as well as a 43-year-old man who was pumping gas nearby were struck by gunfire. Both victims were taken to the hospital, but the teen died on Tuesday morning.

School officials said “there is no danger to any students or staff.” Officials said, pending family approval, they will share additional information as appropriate.

Grief counseling will be offered to students and staff the remainder of the week.

Bunche Elementary School, Grandport Academy and Hague Early Learning Village will still have half days as scheduled on Wednesday, officials said.
