EF-1 tornado tears through parts of Wayne County with winds up to 100 mph

It flipped a hayride, snapped telephone poles and blew out a barn wall.

BELLEVILLE (WWJ) The National Weather Service (NWS) Detroit/Pontiac confirmed an EF-1 tornado tore through parts of Wayne County over the weekend.


According to the NWS, the tornado started at 5:46 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, just south of Martz between Rawsonville and Hoeft. It ripped through Van Buren Township and Belleville, with winds up to 100 miles per hour.





The tornado blazed northeast toward Hull Road, where it flipped a hay ride. It also uprooted multiple trees, snapped telephone poles, and blew out a large barn wall.


After it crossed Sumpter Road, it produced EF-0 damage, scattering tree limbs and knocking down power lines.


It lifted before reaching Savage Road.


The NWS said its path length spanned 3.25 miles, and its width, 200 miles. It lasted four minutes (5:46 p.m. to 5:50 p.m.). No injuries nor deaths were reported.


EF1 tornados are characterized by winds of 86 to 110 miles per hour. The most intense of the six classifications, EF5, has winds of greater than 200 miles per hour.
