ROSEVILLE (WWJ) -- The ex-boyfriend of missing Warren mother Ashley Elkins has been found competent to face trial for her murder.
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office says 33-year-old Deandre Booker's pretrial is now scheduled for Oct. 26, with his trial expected to begin Nov. 10.
Elkins, a mother of two young boys, was last seen on Thursday, Jan. 2 when she left her home to run errands.
Following an investigation, Booker was arrested and charged with lying to police.
Nearly a month after Elkins' disappearance, four additional charges were added for Booker: first-degree premeditated murder, tampering with evidence, disinterment and mutilation of a dead body and concealing the death of an individual.
Ashley ElkinsNational Center For Missing and Endangered Inc.Police said the investigation revealed that Elkins' phone last pinged near the Hampton Court Apartments in Roseville, where Booker lives, leading to a search of Booker's apartment.
At Booker's arraignment, a Roseville police detective told the judge investigators found what they believed to be a crime scene — with "substantial" evidence of violence, including a large amount of blood in the bathroom that DNA tests confirmed were a match for Elkins.
That same day, police recovered Elkins' car in the area of 13 Mile and Little Mack. Authorities also seized a trash dumpster from Booker's apartment complex, although a days long search of a local landfall turned up nothing.
While Elkins' body has not been found, authorities alleged that Booker killed her in his apartment, and then dumped her body elsewhere.
While competency exams stalled Booker's trial several months, Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido said proceedings can now move forward.
"This is a very tragic situation," Lucido said, in an interview with WWJ's Darrylin Horne on Thursday. "The allegations in this case are the allegations. He's innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and that's what we're doing. We're moving in the direction so that the family can start to realize some justice here."
