DETROIT (WWJ) -- Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is getting remarried this weekend.
Deadline Detroit reports that Kilpatrick is set to exchange "I do's" with Laticia Maria McGee, whom he met when she started working as a receptionist in the mayor's office in 2002.
The two reconnected in 2018 while Kilpatrick was serving time in federal prison after a mutual friend passed along McGee’s phone number.
Kilpatrick says the two began praying together over the phone, and McGee later began visiting him in prison. Eventually, their relationship turned romantic.
"I learned you can actually build a relationship by being truthful and honest," he told Deadline Detroit. "She was great at forcing me to be myself."
Their wedding is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Detroit's historic Little Rock Baptist Church.
Kilpatrick was released in June from federal prison after his 28-year sentence was commuted by former President Donald Trump.
The ex-Detroit mayor, who served more than seven years of his sentence, was convicted in 2013 on 24 felony counts of public corruption for a criminal racket involving extortion, bribery, conspiracy and fraud.
Kilpatrick, who says he now plans to study for the ministry, preached at Little Rock church on June 12 shortly after his release.
